Course Ending

I finally have finished the course. After much frustration and yelling at my friend, pet cats and the computer I found the course to be most enjoyable. I congratulate the State Library for such an excellent course as it makes you wonder how much knowledge you can learn by experiencing new and challenging technologies.

Anyway I'm signing off now to go and treat myself to a good long relaxing dinner.

Week 12 - Social Networks

Social Networking could be useful for some libraries but not for all. In my library it wouldn't work as not all my customers are up to date in networking on computers. The majority would think a Social Network would be a place to have a cup of tea and catch up on the local gossip.

I did think some of the sites were interesting but then library sites are probably not the "in" thing but then to each there own.

Week 11 Online applications

I just finished uploading my document in GoogleDocs boy this was very frustrating especially when the computer wouldn't co-operate. After much yelling at the computer hopefully it has worked.

Anyway these online applications would be benefical to the library systems especially communicating with other libraries by passing on different documents when having meetings.
Me personally still like the handwritten lists as it is so much easier especially when the computer has a tizzy fit.

Since I found out what these sites do now, I will know if a customer asks what they are talking about.

Week 10 - Mashups

I found the Star Viewer from Keir Clarke was really interesting to see all the different videoclips on the stars. It makes you realise how big our universe really is and makes you wonder if there could be other life forms.

Mashups is interesting but could also be frustrating especially trying to decide which photo to go with and how you can produce it.

It could work in libraries on different projects if you have the time and expertise and like stress. Unfortunately it wouldn't work here as I don't have the allocated time for mashups so i will leave it to others

week 9 - Podcasts

I visited Denver Public library's podcasts which i think there story resources is really good and educational. Podcasting wouldn't work very well here in a small country town as the majority of our clientale is elderly but some of our younger customers may use it to their benefit. Podcasting would have a use for specific research to gather other people's opinions and viewpoints. Maybe beneficial amongst staff to gather information for customers who may ask.

Answerboards - section 2

I have posted my question on Yahoo. It will be interesting what response i will get but i won't lose sleep over it.

Answerboards

I thought "slamming the boards" is a interesting site especially how it showcases different answers from different librarians around the world. In my busy days in the library I wouldn't have the time to contribute but it would be good for the customers to do reviews on the services we offer. With customers asking questions or reviews we can see how other librarians deal with different situations and how we can improve our library services.

LibraryThing

I really love this site. This is the second time trying to fix the link.

LibraryThing

I really like LibraryThing it gives you such a wide choice. The good thing you can add so many books to your library depending how much you read. If you are like me who loves books this list will never end.

Technorati

I think Technorati is a really interesting website as it corresponds with other websites. Looking up bookmobiles on the two different search plains was quite interesting as it produced different results which is good as you don't want to read the same sites twice. The nswpl2008 photos was good too.

Discovering Del.icio.us

I think del.icio.us is a good idea. This site can be very useful for libraries by organising different catergories for research purposes or even lists of popular books. It can also be useful to be used at work or at home at any time.

My video summary

I picked this video off Youtube as I thought it was appropiate as the nature of the clip is what reading books is all about letting your imagination be absorbed into the fantasies of the literature you read. The music is very calm and soothing as well.

Favourite video

Week 6 - Videos online

I was amazed looking on these two sites - Youtube & Google how many videos are on these sites. I mean it's never-ending no wonder it is so popular and addictive. It is so easy to get lost in the sites looking for different things you just don't know where to start. I know i spent a few hours trying different sites.
These sites can help libraries by showcasing their exhibitions, displays, what's on offer, children's activities, upcoming events. In some ways it can be a good idea if libraries hold workshops showcasing how to do videos in a controlled environment

Wiki - NSWLearning2

This blog refers back to the title of previous blog had a little help from my pet cats who decided to put their comment in.Anyway the NSWLearning2 Wiki was very challenging. I didn't realise there would be so many different headings for librarians. When i finally realised which heading my job description went under i started to write my comment. After some frustration with the computer and yelling at my friend who was helping (mental note:have to buy friend special present) i got my comments on the page edit.
I looked up Wikipedia for information on my home town very informative could be useful to find a certain fact considering it came from the 2006 census.

Wiki findings - Discover

I found Wiki to be an interesting site to find different meanings about different subjects. The Booklovers Wiki was really good as it had interesting book reviews that was easy to understand. I found on the site some books that i never heard of but would like to read. The FAQ link on the site was quite good too.
I found the SJCPL Subject Guides Wiki good too as it gives you general information on books in their collection but it has alot of links.
The Wookieepedia site is a very interesting site for people who like Science Fiction or an avid Star Wars fan. It has alot of links but the only downfall it has too much information to read. I even found a few facts about Star Wars i didn't know.
Wiki would work in libraries as it would come in handy when people are trying to find information on a particular subject providing the information is up to date

My adventure with RSS

I picked for my bloglines account these feeds -
1. LibraryBytes
2. Powerhouse Museum - Photo of the day
3.The Shifted Librarian
4. Yahoo! News: Top Stories
5. Bloglines- News

The RSS concept is certainly different. It's a neverending list where you can choose which one to look at when you have the time, without the need to log onto individual sites. This site may be helpful in the library for certain groups of people (eg family history) to get latest updates instead of looking in every site. This site can be fun and can appeal to anyone and you don't have to be a computer wiz.

nsw public libraries learning 2.0 week 3 - using flickr.

I've finally figured out how to use flickr. There are so many different images to choose from i didn't know where to start. Anyway i found an image called 'Sailing to be free' by Heniusia. The link is www.flickr.com/photos/henia/1296923907.I'm dedicating this photo to a very special person who means everything to me. My special friend has made me feel alive again, care & supported me threw my difficult times, taught me to laugh & be happy again. My friend will always be apart of my life and will understand why i picked this photo. Anyway about flickr it offers people so many choices and i think it's a great asset to anyone who wants to share photos whether to loved ones or for other people around the world.

This is my first effort in doing a blog. So i'm proud of myself. As of today I have never even heard of a blog. With this programme i'm hoping i will learn new ways to use the internet not just for work but personal use as well. With this technology i can now encourage my library customers to see and find similar books/authors and other people in what they are reading. You are never too old to learn new things and you are never too old to read.
